A football match was played, and then Germany won on penalties.
Well, that’s what usually happens, isn’t it? To be more precise, a football match was played, it went to penalties, Germany missed three penalties, but Germany still won on penalties. By doing so, they defeated a team they had never before beaten in a major championship. Yes, that one was a surprise to me too. That there could be a team the serial winners had found impossible to beat up to now.
It would have helped if someone had told the Italians beforehand that on no account must they settle for penalties. Maybe they thought their undefeated record against Germany would protect them. Ha, little did they know! What we in England have found out from bitter experience, more than once. Never gamble with penalty shootouts against the Germans.
The Germans always win. It was ever thus.
