Every major tournament usually produces a dark horse that sneaks through under the radar to the latter stages. At these Euros, that team could be Croatia. For a team with world famous big name players such as Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, the Croatian team have not really been much talked about. But maybe that will change after star man Luka Modric’s stunning long distance volley gave them a winning start to their campaign.
The team could have, and should have, added several more goals, but unlike England yesterday Croatia were far tougher and more savvy and held on comfortably, helped by defender Vedran Corluka doing his finest Terry Butcher impression, all blood and bandages, bravely sticking his injured head in to block a Turkey chance in the penalty area right at the end to help his team maintain their deserved lead.
If Croatia can remember to bring their shooting boots next time, they might just be the team to watch.
